1. Turn on DHCP client
In Windows XP:
Start -> Control Panel -> Network connections -> Local Area Connection (or similar):
Check "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click properties
Check "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server automatically". Click OK.
2. Change outgoing email server to smtp.tky.fi in your email program(s)
3. Other
NEVER offer DHCP service to Trinet since it will confuse other computers. If you have a separate firewall or router appliance, make sure the DHCP is turned off in it. Also if it has a separate WAN-connector, use it to connect to Trinet.
Some settings will be assigned automatically by DHCP, you may set some of these manually if needed:
DNS:
ns3.tky.fi 82.130.0.5
ns4.tky.fi 82.130.63.5
Time:
ntp.hut.fi
News:
news.tky.fi (http://news.tky.fi)
nntp.hut.fi
IRC:
irc.cs.hut.fi
List server:
list.tky.fi
Ftp:
ftp.tky.fi
Wins:
wins.tky.fi
Proxy-server wwwproxy.hut.fi will no longer work
Some library services (eg. NetMot) are available via
https://libproxy.tkk.fi

AYY's new network block:
AS39857 82.130.0.0 / 255.255.192.0 (82.130.0.0 - 82.130.63.255)
Some ports are filtered, see complete list at chapter 6 of Usage Policy.

4. Test your connection using ping
Windows users: the ping command works from the command prompt. Example:
C:\> ping vipunen.hut.fi
If you get a reply, your connection is set up correctly. The reply looks something like this:
PING vipunen.hut.fi (130.233.228.9): 56 data bytes 64 bytes from 130.233.228.9: icmp_seq=0 ttl=62 time=2 ms 64 bytes from 130.233.228.9: icmp_seq=1 ttl=62 time=7 ms
If you don't get a reply, try the following:
C:\> ping 130.233.224.1
If you get a reply now, your DNS (name server) settings are wrong.
If you still don't get a reply, check your IP and hardware settings. If they are correct, check that the network cable is connected properly. A light should light up in the network card, when you connect the cable.
If the light fails to appear, try changing the cable and, if possible, plugging into a different connector. There are network cards available for testing at the AYY Otaniemi Office at Otakaari 11.
